Abstract

This paper describes and analyzes the changes that grocery bags (polyethylene) have experienced in some physical and chemical properties during their degradation. The study was made for “t-shirt bags” which contain and does not contain additives to accelerate its degradation. The samples are placed in a radiation solar simulator with controlled temperature and humidity (Weather-o-meter). During exposure samples were extracted every 50 hours and tensile, elongation, tear and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) assays were carried out. The values indicate that the bags containing oxy-biodegradable additive show appreciable loss of their physical and chemical properties in half the time than those not containing the additive.
