Abstract

This paper explores conceptual and operative aspects related to the development of heritage management instruments in Uruguay, focusing on coastal goods and areas outstanding for their contribution to the maintenance of biodiversity. The general aim of this research is to suggest a conceptual model integrating and representing key questions in biodiversity conservation and cultural heritage as well as enabling such integration to become operative through concrete instruments of territorial management planning and sustainable development provided for in Act 18.308. The methodological approach was based on the complex systems theory and the integration and implementation sciences (I2S). The synthesis and integration of knowledge was achieved through conceptual maps and models, while primary data was collected from interviews and workshops. The main outcome was an extension of the Cultural Heritage Abstract Reference Model (CHARM) for the elaboration of heritage protection instruments focused on species, ecosystems, landscapes and ecosystemic services. This model is expressed in ConML language, which allows its translation into databases for the recording and information management.
